O'Neil, who was in her high school years at the time of the auditions, auditioned for Canadian Idol's 3rd season within the early months of 2005. Judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. Her performance was highly applauded by jury. However, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the bottom 2. Judges were amazed at her performance and suggested viewers choose those who sing well like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the third place in the future. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two competitors, judge Werner said that newspaper headlines were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest champion in the show's time . O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
